RAMONES HANDCRAFT 2023This project reimagines a Ramones album cover through a handcrafted leather jacket. Inspired by punk’s raw, DIY energy, I combined studs, embroidery, and laser-cut typography to create a tactile design system. The jacket functions not only as a garment but as a visual statement bringing fashion, music, and graphic design into one cohesive identity.MOODBOARD & SKETCHESResearch began by collecting imagery tied to the Ramones and punk culture: CBGB flyers, distressed posters, safety pins, and raw block typography. These references shaped the visual direction and informed early sketches of the jacket layout. The sketch served as a blueprint, mapping out patch placement, text, and texture before production began.

THE PROCESSThe making process combined digital tools with hands-on craft. I laser-cut leather letters, stitched patches, set studs by hand, and tested embroidery details. Each stage layered more texture, turning the jacket into a living surface for typography and punk iconography. Imperfections were intentional, echoing the rough and unpolished energy of the subculture.

FINAL PRODUCTThe finished jacket captures the Ramones’ spirit, studs, bold lettering, and raw detailing colliding into one object. It works as both a wearable piece and a graphic statement, blurring the line between craft and communication design. To expand the concept further, the jacket was extended into a complete identity system, serving as the centerpiece for the album cover. This shift transforms the piece from fashion into a broader communication platform, uniting music, craft, and graphic design in one cohesive visual world.

REFLECTIONI chose to create a piece of clothing as the foundation of this project to reflect my background in fashion and craftsmanship. By treating the jacket as both garment and canvas, I merged typography, texture, and punk iconography into a tactile design system. This process showed me how physical craft can expand into visual identity — bridging fashion, music, and communication design. Moving forward, I’m excited to keep exploring how handcrafted work can inform and strengthen graphic systems.
